I think a connection that I can make between Les Mis and modern America is the wealthy people. In America, money is so important. Whether you're rich, poor, or middle class, money is important to you. Lots of wealthy people here in the United States are stingy and would rather not give their money away. Even though the right thing for them to do is give back to those who need it most, they'd rather keep the money they have for themselves. It's really sad to see people be tight with their money, especially if they have lots of it. In Les Mis, the bishop talked to an aristocrat who didn't care to donate any of his money to the hungry or poor who needed it more than he did. The bishop didn't like how this man had lots of money and still refused to give even some of it away. I see that a lot in modern times with celebrities and billionaires.

The bishop lives in a small house that doesn't have much decoration but he thinks it's enough. This tells me that he's a humble man that doesn't need a big house, he's perfectly fine with a small house. The house was old because he wanted to preserve it for as long as he could. He also kept no locks on his doors so that anyone could come into his house if they were in need of help. I find it amazing that he did this without being scared of any criminals breaking into his house. That shows that he puts others and their well-being before his own safety.
